Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then located numerous other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important official commented the attack left him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
